Application
Coastal erosion and shoreline retreat caused by stronger waves and rising sea levels threaten coastal infrastructure and ecosystems. As an innovative solution, geosynthetic materials dampen wave energy effectively without upsetting the natural balance around them.
In practice, this technology uses geotubes (large sand-filled tubes) installed parallel to the shore to break waves before they reach land. Geobags (small geotextile bags) are also stacked in tiers to reinforce coastal slopes against erosion by sea currents.
This method offers big advantages because installation is fast, flexible and far more cost-effective than conventional breakwaters. The cost savings come from filling the structures directly with local sand at the project site.
