Cracked concrete, sunken roads and slope failures are typical damage usually caused by an unstable subgrade. Without the right treatment, these conditions can lead to structural failure and damage to the construction above.
One effective solution is to use geosynthetic products such as geotextile, geocell or geogrid. Geotextile, especially woven geotextile, has fairly high tensile strength, so it transfers the loads on the soil well. It also works as a separator that keeps good-quality selected fill from mixing with the soft subgrade.
Geocell and geogrid each work through their own mechanism. Geocell provides confinement of the fill material inside its cells, making the material denser with minimal lateral deformation. Geogrid works through interlocking of soil or rock particles, providing high tensile strength and minimizing lateral deformation so loads are spread evenly over a wider area.
