Application

Application

Road construction on soft or expansive soil almost always faces problems such as low bearing capacity and high, uneven settlement. These get worse when the road is built without pavement or good drainage, as with many access roads in plantations and project sites.

In these conditions, geosynthetics such as geotextile, geocell or geogrid are a crucial solution to increase the bearing capacity of the soil. They work by spreading wheel loads horizontally, preventing subsidence and deep wheel tracks (rutting). With this reinforcement layer, the stress transferred to the subgrade is smaller and more even. Their high tensile strength also lets them deal with local settlement.

Besides reinforcement, separation is also very important in access road construction, so that the aggregate or crushed stone does not sink into and mix with the mud below. Without a separator, the road foundation quickly loses its effectiveness through contamination by fine subgrade particles. Woven and non-woven geotextile are the right materials for this separation.
