The main problem in building water storage ponds and landfills is the risk of leaks as water seeps into the ground. Solving it requires an effective, strong and durable waterproof lining system using geosynthetic materials.

The first and most common solution is HDPE geomembrane, which is highly impermeable and resistant to chemicals and UV exposure. In practice, it is usually combined with non-woven geotextile as a protective cushion so the geomembrane is not torn by sharp objects in the subgrade.

An equally effective alternative is the Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL), which uses a layer of bentonite clay that swells and seals gaps by itself (self-sealing) when it comes into contact with water. This unique property makes GCL very reliable for preventing leaks in areas with a high risk of ground movement, such as landfill bases and industrial waste containment.
