GEOMAT

Geomat is a land conservation geosynthetic in the form of a three-dimensional (3D) mat made from polymers such as high-density polyethylene. Its open structure is specially designed to prevent slope erosion while supporting the growth of vegetation roots. The material is flexible, UV resistant, and does not easily degrade from chemicals or microorganisms.

In civil engineering and environmental works, geomat is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional protective structures such as concrete slope protection.

Functions

FUNCTIONS OF GEOMAT

Geomat functions include:

  • Slope Erosion Protection
Geomat holds soil particles in place against heavy rainfall, surface runoff and wind on slopes.
  • Growing Medium and Vegetation Protection
The three-dimensional structure of geomat locks in seeds and soil, giving plant roots room to grow through the material and bind the soil naturally.
  • Soil Surface Stabilization
The material spreads runoff evenly, preventing erosion rills and minor soil movement on the slope surface.

Applications

GEOMAT APPLICATIONS

  • Toll Road and Railway Slope Protection
Prevents landslides and surface soil erosion on cut and fill slopes along transport corridors, including toll road and railway construction.
  • Riverbank and Drainage Channel Protection
Resists scouring by water currents on riverbanks, canals, storage ponds and reservoir edges.
  • Landscaping and Green Areas
Used in city parks, golf courses and commercial areas with sloping ground so grass can grow neatly and bind the soil.

Types

TYPES OF GEOMAT

The Interim Special Specification SKh-1.3.17 is the technical standard guideline for planning and installing slope erosion control systems on infrastructure projects in Indonesia.

Under SKh-1.3.17, erosion control materials are grouped into three types according to slope gradient and material durability:

Material Type Slope Type and Max. Gradient (V:H) Max. Slope Angle Material Description Durability Main Application & Use
Type I: Natural Erosion Control Blanket Soil Slope 1 : 2 26.5° Erosion control blanket made from natural (biodegradable) fibers. Minimum 6 Months Temporary erosion protection until vegetation grows naturally
Type II: Polymer Erosion Control Blanket Soil Slope 1 : 1 45° Polymer fibers mechanically bonded between two layers of slowly degrading synthetic netting. Minimum 12 Months Medium-term protection on moderate slopes so plants can bind the soil
Type III: Turf Reinforcement Mat Soil Slope or Combined Soil and Rock 1 : 0.5 63° Synthetic fibers, filaments, netting or wire mesh processed into a permanent 3D matrix (may include biodegradable components). Permanent Permanent erosion prevention on steep slopes where vegetation alone is not enough

FAQ

GEOMAT FAQ

What are the advantages of geomat over conventional slope protection methods?

The advantages of geomat:

  • Environmentally Friendly: Supports natural greening of slopes without spoiling the landscape.
  • Easy Installation: Faster to install than building a concrete retaining wall.
How does geomat prevent slope erosion?

Geomat works by protecting plant seeds inside its three-dimensional voids. When it rains, geomat shields the soil surface from raindrop impact and slows surface runoff. Over time, the seeds grow and their roots penetrate the geomat mesh, forming a much stronger natural soil protection system.

What are the main steps for installing geomat on a slope?

The installation steps for geomat:

  • Clearing and Leveling the Slope: Clear the slope surface of sharp rocks, roots and sharp objects.
  • Digging an Anchor Trench: Dig a small trench at the top of the slope to lock in the upper end of the geomat.
  • Rolling Out the Geomat: Roll the geomat sheets vertically from the top to the bottom of the slope.
  • Anchoring: Secure the geomat to the ground with pin anchors.
  • Planting: Plant using the sod (taplok) method or hydroseeding on the geomat.
