Geosynthetic materials are essential in landfills to prevent soil and groundwater pollution. They form the base lining system and the top capping system that control the flow of hazardous liquids and gases so they do not leak into the environment.
In the base liner, HDPE geomembrane and Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL) work together as a double waterproof barrier to contain leachate (liquid from waste). The geotextile layer provides filtration and separation and protects against punctures from sharp material, while geonet and geocomposite carry the leachate to the collection pipes without clogging.
In the final capping stage, geosynthetic layers are installed over the waste to minimize rainwater infiltration and capture methane gas so it can be converted into energy. With these technologies, a landfill is no longer just a dumping site but a safe, stable and environmentally friendly waste management facility.
