FILTRATION AND SEPARATION

Application

Application

Building infrastructure on soil with complex mechanical properties is a big challenge, because the soil layers must stay stable. Mixing between layers with different properties (intermixing) and internal erosion from water flow can weaken the structure and reduce the bearing capacity of the soil. That is why filtration and separation systems are used to prevent structural degradation and make sure every material layer keeps doing its technical job.

Filtration and separation systems usually use geosynthetics such as non-woven and woven geotextile. Non-woven geotextile provides filtration: its random fiber structure forms complex pores that let water pass freely while holding back soil particles. It is typically used in subsurface drainage or slope protection, where the aim is to relieve pore water pressure without damaging the soil behind it. Woven geotextile provides separation: its structure resembles sack weaving and has high tensile strength, making it very effective at spreading loads on road construction and reclamation sites.

Using geosynthetics for filtration and separation brings long-term benefits for the durability and efficiency of construction projects. They not only increase the overall bearing capacity of the soil but also reduce maintenance costs, because the risk of settlement from unstable soil layers is effectively minimized.

Benefits
