Geocell: Benefits, Functions and Installation

Geocell: Benefits, Functions and Installation

Geocell is a sheet made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) formed into a honeycomb shape and joined together into a strong structure. The benefits of geocell are especially valuable in construction, including preventing the erosion that often occurs on slopes and reinforcing soft soil, typically in road building.

Geocell Installation

Geocell is installed at a location that has been planned in advance. To keep the material from shifting, it can be anchored to the ground surface. Each cell is then stretched open until it covers the required area. Once the whole surface is covered, infilling can begin.

The cells can be filled with sand and stone, or whatever suits site conditions, and then compacted. Once the infill has reached the required density, add a cover layer such as soil or another material.

For geocell to perform optimally, the placement area must be measured carefully to avoid gaps. Once accurate measurements are taken, the geocell is shipped to the construction site for installation.

Benefits of Geocell

Geocell offers users many benefits. It saves time because installation is simple, extends pavement life, can save up to 40% of aggregate/base material, and is more cost-effective.

The product has good resistance to UV light, chemicals and organisms. It also performs well against coastal erosion and slope erosion.

Infilling is easy too: you can use sand, concrete, gravel or local soil, depending on project needs.

Geocell Functions and Applications

Geocell is widely used in construction. Besides being easy to install, it is popular because its price is relatively lower than other geosynthetic materials. Maintenance costs are also low, so it is highly recommended for long-term projects. This geosynthetic can be used for soil stabilisation, vegetation restoration, slope reinforcement and excavation protection.
