HDPE Geomembrane for a Textile Mill Clean Water Pond

HDPE Geomembrane for a Textile Mill Clean Water Pond

Project Background

Pekalongan is not only famous for its rich batik culture; it is also the lifeblood of a textile industry that keeps beating strongly in Central Java. One of our clients there needed a large-capacity clean water storage facility. The pond was meant to keep process water for production flowing without interruption, especially to anticipate the dry season or fluctuations in groundwater supply.

However, building a clean water pond directly on the subgrade carries major risks. Without a special liner, the clean water would quickly seep away into the ground. Conversely, minerals, dirt or sediment from the soil could cloud the clean water. This is where PETRA’s expertise in geosynthetic materials was put to the test.

Key Pond Lining Challenges

Every project has its own complexities. For this textile mill, the client gave very clear specifications and requirements:

  1. 100% Watertight: The pond must not leak at all (zero leakage). Water loss through seepage could disrupt production targets and drive up the mill’s operating costs.
  2. Preserving Water Purity: The liner must not release toxic chemicals (non-toxic). Since the water is used for dyeing fabric, even slight contamination could ruin the colors and lower fabric quality.
  3. Site Conditions: The soil at the excavation site could damage the main layer because of small stones and root remnants. The waterproof liner needed extra protection so it would not tear easily under the heavy load of water.

PETRA’s Solution: Geomembrane & Geotextile

To meet these operational challenges, PETRA’s technical team designed a practical yet field-proven double lining system. We combined two premium materials: HDPE Geomembrane 1 mm thick and Non-Woven Geotextile 300 g.

Why two layers, and why this combination? Let’s look at their specific functions.

Protection from 300 g Non-Woven Geotextile

Non-woven geotextile as a protective layer beneath the HDPE geomembrane

The first step before laying the waterproof sheet was to spread the 300 g Non-Woven Geotextile. If you are not familiar with it, this material looks a bit like a thick carpet made of synthetic polymer fibers. In this project its role was essential: it acts as a cushion or protective layer.

The geotextile is laid directly on the subgrade. Its main job is to protect the geomembrane from sharp objects hidden in the soil, such as pointed gravel. With this 300 grams per square meter cushion, the risk of the main layer tearing or leaking due to mechanical puncture when walked on or under water pressure is eliminated.

The Waterproof Layer: 1 mm HDPE Geomembrane for the Clean Water Pond

Once the bottom protective layer was neatly in place, the main material was installed: 1 mm High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Geomembrane. This material acts as an absolute shield separating the clean water from the surrounding soil.

PETRA’s 1 mm HDPE provides complete protection. Its permeability is extremely low, so it keeps the clean water locked inside the pond. HDPE is also highly resistant to UV and extreme weather, which makes it ideal for open ponds in tropical climates. More importantly, the material is inert (it does not react chemically easily), so the mill’s water stays pure and safe for textile processing.

A Highly Precise Installation Process

Premium materials are wasted without proper installation. The PETRA team joined the HDPE Geomembrane sheets using advanced hot wedge welder machines for straight runs, and an extrusion welder for more intricate details around the pipes (inlet/outlet).

It didn’t stop there: every weld was strictly tested. We used the air pressure test method for double-track seams and the vacuum box test for repair points or extrusion welds. The goal was simple: to make absolutely sure there was not even the smallest micro gap.

Project Results and Conclusion

The perfect combination of material specifications and precise field execution paid off. The clean water pond at this Pekalongan textile mill is now fully operational at peak performance. The client has secured its production water supply, free from worries about leaks or water contaminated by soil.

This case study is clear proof of PETRA’s commitment to Indonesia’s infrastructure sector. With the protection of 300 g Non-Woven Geotextile and the strength of 1 mm HDPE Geomembrane, the client’s investment is highly efficient for long-term use.
