Geomembrane Lifespan: How Long Does It Last?

How long does geomembrane last? Here is a short explanation of geomembrane lifespan, one of the questions geomembrane users ask most often.

How long a geomembrane lasts depends on whether it is exposed or not. The plasticizer, filler, carbon black and additive content is assumed to meet the GRI GM-13 standard with the following composition.

Service life: unexposed conditions

Conditions with no sun exposure are found in applications such as:

  1. Landfills
  2. Coal Ash Yards
  3. Road embankments
  4. Drainage

The geomembrane service life study for unexposed conditions was carried out in 2002 and consists of 3 stages (Stage A, Stage B, Stage C)

A                : Antioxidant Depletion Time

B                : Induction Time to the Onset of Degradation

C                : Time to Reach 50% Degradation

The total predicted service life of a geomembrane depends on site temperature. Below is the average service life of geomembrane in unexposed conditions.

The table above shows that at a normal temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, the service life of a geomembrane can reach 166 years

Service life: exposed conditions

UV-exposed conditions are found in applications such as:

  1. Aquaculture ponds
  2. Embung (small retention reservoirs)
  3. Artificial ponds
  4. Water storage ponds
