Geocell Slope Reinforcement for Soil Slopes

Geocell Slope Reinforcement for Soil Slopes

A reinforced soil slope, such as one built with geocell slope reinforcement, is a form of
mechanical soil stabilization using planar reinforcement elements in a
slope structure with a face inclination of less than 70°. Mechanically stabilized
earth structures with a face inclination of 70° to 90°
are classified as retaining walls.

The main functions of a geocell-reinforced soil slope are:

1. Increasing slope stability with geocell, especially when a steeper slope angle
is desired while remaining safe compared with a slope not reinforced with geocell,
or after a failure has occurred. The type of drainage
used is perforated pipe (perforated pipes) wrapped in granular
material and connected to drainage channels of coarse aggregate,
lined with a Geotextile filter. A Geocomposite system can also be used for
the channels.

2. The function of geosynthetics placed at the edge of a compacted embankment slope
is to provide lateral resistance during compaction of the fill. Increased lateral resistance allows
higher soil density and improves lateral confinement
of the soil at the slope face. This edge reinforcement also allows
heavy equipment to operate safely at the edge of the slope. For embankments with
cohesive soil, Non-Woven Geotextile can be used in the same plane as the
reinforcement to dissipate pore pressure within the compacted
fill.
