The Environmental Impact of Geosynthetics
What Are Geosynthetics?
Geosynthetics are products made from various polymers, such as Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Polyester (PET), Polystyrene (PS) and others. To understand the environmental impact of geosynthetics, it helps to know that these polymers also vary in their physical parameters and processing methods. For example:
Polyethylene is divided into several types based on a physical parameter (density):
- High Density Polyethylene (HDPE),
- Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE),
- Very Low Density Polyethylene (VLDPE).
Polystyrene is divided into several types based on the processing method:
- Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)
- Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)
Geosynthetics are materials generally used in construction, especially where they are in direct contact with soil. They provide additional reinforcement so that a construction project reaches its required safety factor. Geosynthetics can also act as a separating material that prevents harmful pollution of the environment.
Environmental Impact of Geosynthetics
So what positive impact do geosynthetics have on the environment? Geosynthetics offer excellent solutions, both directly and indirectly. A direct example is waste management. Waste must be treated further so that it is safe when it is released into the environment.

In practice, conventional containment structures carry a risk of leaks that pollute the environment. Here, geosynthetics (especially geomembrane) provide a solution as a waterproof layer that reduces the risk of leakage.
Geosynthetic projects
An indirect example can be found in reinforcement projects, where geosynthetics are buried within the construction foundation. Because geosynthetics are made from polymers (plastics) that take a long time to break down, they can reinforce a structure for a very long time. One example of geosynthetics used for reinforcement is in road construction and road repair.
Geosynthetics are UV stabilized to give them better resistance when exposed to sunlight, and many polymers have good resistance to chemicals they come into contact with. Although geosynthetics are made from polymers (plastics), in general they do not pollute the environment; rather, they help solve environmental problems, especially in waste management.

PT. Petra Nusa Elshada supplies a wide range of geosynthetics, such as geomembrane, geotextile, geogrid, geocell, geomat, geofoam, geobag, geotube, geosynthetic clay liner, geocomposite, geopipe and concrete canvas. The geosynthetics available come in various specifications that can be matched to your project needs, in two types: local (TKDN, domestic content certified) and imported (non-TKDN). The geosynthetic products available comply with GRI and ASTM standards.
