Geotextile vs Geomembrane: Key Differences

Geotextile vs Geomembrane: Key Differences

Geotextile vs Geomembrane: Geotextile

Geotextile and geomembrane are often used in construction projects. Many people think they are the same type of geosynthetic with the same function, but when comparing geotextile vs geomembrane, geotextile and geomembrane are made from different materials and have different functions.

Permeable geotextile fabric compared with geomembrane

Geotextile is a permeable geosynthetic made from synthetic fibres that are needle-punched or woven, and it lets water pass through. Geotextile essentially functions as a separator, filter, protection and reinforcement. It is made from polyester (PET) or polypropylene (PP).

Geomembrane

Geomembrane is a waterproof geosynthetic made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) processed with advanced technology. Geomembrane is generally used to contain all kinds of liquids.

The two types of geosynthetics do have something in common: both are widely used in earthworks projects.

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) geomembrane comes in thicknesses from 0.5 mm – 2 mm, and some suppliers offer greater thicknesses on request.

HDPE geomembrane is corrosion resistant, heat resistant up to 97 degrees Celsius, sunlight resistant and can last up to 15 years.

Geomembrane is also commonly used as a pond liner, which can increase production and efficiency and save money thanks to its long service life of up to 15 years.
