Geotextile Joining Methods: Overlap and Sewing
Geotextile is used as a reinforcement and separation layer for embankments on soft soil. Geotextiles on the market come in rolls with a standard width of 4 m and lengths of 50 m, 100 m, 150 m and 200 m, so geotextile joining methods matter on every project.

That is why the quality of geotextile seams must be assured.
Geotextile can be joined by overlapping or by sewing.

Geotextile Joining

To use geotextile material efficiently, sewing can be chosen as the joining method. Points to watch when sewing geotextile:
- Thread type
The thread must be strong and durable enough
- Thread tension
Thread tension must be set tight enough for the geotextile to be sewn closely
- Neat stitching
- Stitch type
There are 2 stitch types
- 101: single-thread chain stitch
- 401: double-thread chain stitch

- Number of rows
Two or more parallel rows for added security
- Seam type
Seams can be prayer type (SSa-2), J type (SSn-2) or butterfly type (SSd-2)
