Geogrid Road Installation: Functions and Benefits

Geogrid is a sheet with fairly large openings that functions as reinforcement. Unlike geotextile, another sheet-type geosynthetic used for filtration and separation, geogrid is a soil improvement method that increases bearing capacity. There are several kinds of geogrid used in different applications, but for geogrid road installation, biaxial geogrid and polyester geogrid are generally used.

In pavements, geogrid is usually installed beneath the crushed stone (base course). Geogrid increases the elastic modulus of the base layer because lateral movement of the material under load is reduced.
Functions of geogrid in pavements include:
- Preventing differential settlement (localised settlement)
- Interlocking the aggregate so the fill above is stiffer and distributes loads from above more evenly.
- Reducing wheel ruts and delaying reflective cracking.

Benefits of Using Geogrid:
- Resistant to UV light, mould, chemicals and microorganisms.
- Quick and easy to install.
- Easy to join.
- Excellent interlocking reinforcement system.
- Strong enough for long-term loading
