0.75mm Geomembrane for a Leak-Proof Raw Water Pond
Background: Why an Earthen Pond Alone Is Not Enough
In the early planning stage, the project owner realized that the soil in the Bagan Siapi-api area has a porosity that makes it prone to water infiltration. If the PKS (palm oil mill) relied only on an ordinary excavated pond, the raw water volume would keep shrinking drastically due to seepage (seepage) into the underlying soil (subgrade). A raw water pond geomembrane was the answer.
Besides the threat of losing raw water, there were crucial environmental factors to protect. Palm oil industrial areas often sit next to sensitive ecosystems. The pond needed a lining system that not only keeps the raw water from being lost, but also keeps the area safe from cross-contamination, protects the surrounding soil quality and meets strict environmental compliance standards.
The project therefore required an insulating material that is 100% waterproof, highly durable and able to withstand the heavy-duty operating conditions of the mill.
Technical Solution: Advantages of 0.75mm HDPE Geomembrane
After careful technical calculations, HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) Geomembrane with a thickness of 0.75mm was chosen as the optimal specification for this 11,900m² project. Why this specification? Here are its three main technical functions:
- Ultra-Tight Waterproof Layer (Zero Permeability)
The main function of this liner is to cut off direct contact between water and soil. The high-density polyethylene molecular structure of HDPE creates a perfect hydraulic barrier. Raw water cannot seep into the ground, so the stored volume remains stable even during a long dry season. - Extra Resistance to Chemicals (Chemical Resistance)
Although the pond holds raw water, its location inside a palm oil mill complex demands a liner that can withstand various conditions. HDPE Geomembrane is highly resistant to acids, alkalis and other industrial chemicals. Being inert (non-reactive), the geomembrane sheets will not become brittle or degrade even when exposed to residues in the mill environment. - Protecting Soil Quality and the Environment
By isolating the raw water above the geomembrane layer, we also indirectly protect the subgrade. Fluctuations in water pH or any mixing of raw water with external elements will not damage the fertility and quality of the soil below, making this solution very environmentally friendly (eco-friendly).
The 0.75mm thickness was chosen because it offers the best combination of tensile strength to hold millions of liters of water and flexibility (elongation), which lets the material follow the ground contour if slight subgrade settlement occurs (differential settlement).
Field Execution: Precision Installation of the Raw Water Pond Geomembrane over 11,900m²
Deploying and joining 11,900 square meters of material is no simple job. The field technicians had to apply very strict Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures:
- Preparing the Subgrade
The pond base was leveled, compacted and completely cleared of sharp stones, tree roots or coarse material that could cause mechanical tears (puncture) in the geomembrane. - Material Deployment
The 0.75mm HDPE Geomembrane rolls were laid out according to the shop drawing. Technicians set the overlap between sheets precisely in preparation for joining. - Double-Track Welding Technology (Hot Wedge Welding)
To join this huge area, an automatic hot wedge welder was used. The machine melts the overlapping surfaces and applies pressure at the same time, creating a double weld (double-track seam). This technique ensures the seam is as strong as, or even stronger than, the sheet itself. - Leak Testing (Seam Testing
Every weld line had to be tested. Using the Air Pressure Test method, pressurized air was injected into the channel between the double welds. If the air pressure stays stable and does not drop, the seam is proven 100% watertight and free of even the smallest leak.
Final Result: Efficient and Sustainable Mill Operations
With the 0.75mm HDPE Geomembrane installation complete at the Bagan Siapi-api raw water pond, the project owner now has a robust, efficient and worry-free water storage facility.
The palm oil mill can secure its raw water supply without fear of losses through seepage. At the same time, the project is clear proof of responsible industrial infrastructure that keeps the soil clean and protects the environment sustainably.
Using advanced lining materials such as HDPE Geomembrane proves that with the right engineering approach, operational efficiency and environmental conservation can go hand in hand perfectly.
