Choosing the Right Pond Liner Thickness

Choosing the Right Pond Liner Thickness

Functions of an HDPE Pond Liner

Before choosing a pond liner thickness, it helps to understand what the liner does. The main function of an HDPE liner is to prevent direct contact with the soil and stop water contamination. An HDPE liner or geomembrane can prevent waste from settling in the soil and stop hazardous chemicals such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, acids and other harmful substances from contaminating a pond. Applying an HDPE liner can therefore reduce the risk of disease in pond fish and support their growth.

HDPE Geomembrane is frequently used in ponds and aquaculture ponds because it is waterproof and resistant to UV rays, chemicals and corrosion. The material functions as a waterproof liner, with a permeability coefficient of 1 x 10-17 cm/s, effectively preventing water seepage and extending a pond’s service life. HDPE liner also withstands high temperatures up to 110°C and low temperatures down to -70°C. This resistance to many conditions enables HDPE Geomembrane to withstand all geological and climatic conditions.

How Do You Choose the Right Pond Liner Thickness?

  1. Pond depth: the geomembrane thickness used generally depends on the pond depth. This is an important determining factor because the deeper the pond, the greater the water pressure that the HDPE liner must withstand. A deeper pond therefore needs a thicker liner. Shallow ponds can use 0.5–0.75 mm geomembrane, while deeper ponds can use a thickness of 0.75–1.5 mm.
  2. Pond service life: the intended service life also affects the required geomembrane thickness. A service life of 3–5 years can use 0.5–0.75 mm geomembrane, while a service life of 5–10 years can use a thickness of 0.75–1.5 mm. For a longer service life, use a thicker HDPE liner.
  3. Pond use: the purpose of the pond is another important factor in determining liner thickness. If the pond only contains fish, it can use 0.5–0.75 mm geomembrane. A pond used for shrimp or fish farming should use a thicker liner of 0.75–1.5 mm.
  4. Soil conditions: different soil types affect geomembrane durability and puncture resistance differently. If the soil at the site offers high penetration resistance or contains sharp rocks that could damage the geomembrane, a thicker geomembrane is required.
