Geosynthetics in Mining Areas
Mining Areas
The mining sector operates many different kinds of areas, such as exploitation areas, haul roads, storage areas (stockpiles), treatment areas (tailings) and so on. These areas carry risks of waste (pollution) and structural damage. To deal with these risks, existing conditions in the mine need protection and reinforcement. One solution is to use geosynthetics in mining.

Mine reinforcement areas
The most important area in a mine is the exploitation area, which is usually surrounded by slopes. These slopes have a high risk of landslides, especially when drilling and blasting take place nearby. To prevent landslides on the slopes, 2 geosynthetic products can be used: geomat and geocell. Geomat helps vegetation grow on the slope and minimizes slope erosion. Geocell confines the slope soil and provides a planting medium on the slope.

Risk of damage in mining areas
Besides landslides on slopes, mining areas also face the risk of road damage. Typical damage includes rutting and saturation of the road structure. Mine road damage usually occurs because the road structure cannot carry the loads of passing vehicles and there is no proper drainage system. To overcome this, geosynthetics such as geotextile, geogrid and geocell can provide reinforcement and stabilize the road structure. Geosynthetic products can also reduce the amount of fill material needed for the road, cutting material costs and keeping the road from becoming too high.

Besides roads, the structure of stockpile areas also needs attention, since stockpiles are where the mined material from the exploitation area (carried along the mine roads) is placed. Stockpile areas are usually filled with tall, cone-shaped piles of mined material about 8 – 10 meters high. The stockpile ground must be reinforced to reduce the risk of the material being pressed into the stockpile soil.

Mining is never 100% efficient; other materials are always mined along with the ore. That is why the mined material has to go through a recovery process. The waste from this recovery process is usually stored and is called tailings. This material is considered waste and cannot be released into the surrounding environment, so it must be contained and processed further. Geomembrane can be used as a waterproof liner in these containment areas.

PT. Petra Nusa Elshada supplies a wide range of geosynthetics, such as geomembrane, geotextile, geogrid, geocell, geomat, geofoam, geobag, geotube, geosynthetic clay liner, geocomposite, geopipe and concrete canvas. The geosynthetics available come in various specifications that can be matched to your project needs, in two types: local (TKDN, domestic content certified) and imported (non-TKDN). The geosynthetic products available comply with GRI and ASTM standards.
