HDPE Geomembrane Applications Across Industries

HDPE Geomembrane Applications Across Industries

Main Functions of HDPE Geomembrane

Seepage prevention: a geomembrane layer acts as a waterproof, anti-seepage liner that actively prevents moisture ingress and leakage, which underpins most HDPE geomembrane applications.

Improved soil stability: it can be used to improve the stability and load-bearing capacity of soil. It can reinforce soil structures such as road subgrades, reduce deformation and settlement, and improve ground safety and stability.

Isolation: it can isolate contaminants and pollutants in different soil layers so they do not contaminate each other. This is important for pollution prevention and control in landfill and industrial waste projects.

Protection: it can protect surface and underground structures from erosion and environmental damage and extend the service life of a project.

HDPE Geomembrane Applications

Mining geomembrane: Waste pond seepage prevention: mining operations generate large amounts of waste. To prevent the hazardous substances in this waste from seeping into groundwater or surface water, waste ponds need to be built. Geomembrane can be used as the anti-seepage liner of these waste ponds, effectively preventing waste from seeping out and protecting the surrounding environment from pollution.

Stockpile covering: in open-pit mines, ore has to be stockpiled after it is extracted. Geomembrane can be used as a cover layer on site to keep the stockpiled ore from contact with the air and moisture, reducing chemical reactions and pollutant spills.

Process solution seepage prevention: some metal smelting and extraction processes produce process solutions containing various hazardous substances. Geomembrane can be used as the anti-seepage liner of process solution ponds to prevent these solutions from seeping into groundwater or surface water and causing environmental pollution.

Groundwater level control: during mining it may be necessary to control the groundwater level to keep groundwater from entering the mine or affecting mining operations. Geomembrane can be used as a groundwater barrier to control groundwater levels effectively.

Improved soil stability: in some mining areas, mining activity can destabilize the soil and make it prone to collapse or landslides. Geomembrane can be used as a reinforcing material to improve soil stability and reduce geological hazards.

Environmental protection: mining inevitably causes some damage to the surrounding environment. Using geomembrane can reduce the environmental impact of mining activities and protect the integrity and stability of natural ecosystems.

Landfills (Final Disposal Sites)

Anti-seepage liner: landfills need an effective anti-seepage liner to keep pollutants in the waste from seeping into groundwater. Laying geomembrane on the bottom and sides of the landfill prevents hazardous substances in the waste from penetrating and contaminating the groundwater below and around it.

Intermediate cover layer: as landfilling continues, the volume of waste keeps growing. To reduce odors, prevent pollution and protect groundwater, the landfill needs to be covered periodically. Geomembrane can be used as part of the intermediate cover to cover freshly placed waste and prevent moisture penetration, odor diffusion and pollutant leakage.

Leachate collection system: waste in a landfill produces leachate, a liquid formed when water in the waste mixes with dissolved substances. Geomembrane can be used to build a leachate collection system that keeps leachate from seeping into groundwater. By arranging geomembrane and drainage pipes between the waste layer and the geomembrane layer, leachate can be collected and treated.

Gas collection system: landfills generate large amounts of biogas and hazardous gases that must be collected and processed to reduce environmental pollution. Geomembrane can be used as a waterproof liner that prevents gas leakage while directing the collected gas through gas pipes to treatment facilities.

Slope and surface cover: to protect landfill slopes from erosion and reduce the spread of odors, the slopes and surface of the landfill can be covered with geomembrane.

Aquaculture

Seepage prevention: geomembrane can be used to build an anti-seepage layer in wastewater treatment systems to ensure wastewater does not leak into groundwater or soil.

Aquaculture water surface cover: in certain aquaculture scenarios, such as shrimp or fish ponds, the pond surface can be covered with geomembrane to maintain water temperature, reduce evaporation and limit external environmental impacts.

Bottom liner: to protect the soil or bottom sediment from pollution and keep the pond clean, the bottom of rearing ponds can be lined with geomembrane. This helps reduce the entry of contaminants and the buildup of sediment.

Pond isolation and partitioning: geomembrane can be used to build partition walls or layers that divide a pond into separate areas.

Agriculture

Seepage prevention: geomembrane can be used as an anti-seepage liner in irrigation systems. Applying geomembrane where water meets soil, such as in irrigation channels, reservoirs and ponds, reduces water leakage and waste and improves irrigation efficiency.

Mulch: geomembrane can be used as a mulch film to cover the soil surface, helping store heat, retain moisture and raise soil temperature to promote plant growth.

Greenhouse cover: geomembrane can be used as a greenhouse covering material, providing an effective insulating layer that limits temperature and humidity changes between the inside and outside of the greenhouse and maintains a good growing environment.

Crop cover: in fruit and vegetable cultivation, geomembrane can be used as a mulch layer over crop rows to retain moisture, suppress weeds and raise soil temperature, speeding up plant growth and increasing yields.

Pond Liners

Seepage prevention: geomembrane is often used as the anti-seepage layer of pond liners, effectively preventing water penetration and keeping the pond water level stable.

Wastewater treatment ponds: geomembrane can be used as the anti-seepage liner of wastewater treatment tanks to keep wastewater from leaking into groundwater or soil and to ensure it is treated effectively.

Fish ponds: geomembrane can be used as a liner for fish ponds to protect water quality and ensure a good environment for fish growth.

Artificial lakes: geomembrane can be used as the anti-seepage liner of artificial lakes to keep lake water from leaking into the ground and ensure a stable water level and water quality.

Irrigation water sources: geomembrane can be used to line irrigation water sources to prevent water leakage and ensure an adequate and stable irrigation water supply.

Mine Tailings Ponds

Anti-seepage liner: tailings ponds are key facilities for storing tailings (the waste left after ore processing). Because tailings can contain various hazardous substances, geomembrane is widely used as the anti-seepage liner of tailings ponds to keep them from seeping into groundwater or soil.

Base layer: geomembrane can be used as part of the cover layer over freshly deposited tailings to prevent moisture penetration, odor spread and contaminant spills.

Soil erosion prevention: geomembrane can be used as a surface cover around the pond to prevent soil erosion and maintain the ecological stability of the surrounding area.

Oil and Gas

Wastewater treatment: oil extraction produces large amounts of wastewater containing oil, heavy metals and other hazardous substances. Geomembrane can be used as the anti-seepage liner of wastewater treatment systems to keep wastewater from seeping into groundwater or soil.

Waste treatment: waste produced during oil extraction, such as sludge and solid waste, must be treated and disposed of. Geomembrane can be used as an anti-seepage liner at disposal sites to keep waste from seeping into groundwater or soil and to reduce environmental pollution.

Anti-corrosion layer for oil pipelines: oil pipelines are prone to corrosion and damage during transport and need an anti-corrosion protective layer to extend their service life. Geomembrane can be used as an anti-corrosion layer that covers the pipe surface, preventing erosion by moisture and chemicals and protecting the pipe from corrosion.

Anti-seepage liner for oil and gas storage tanks: oil and gas storage tanks need good anti-seepage properties to keep stored oil and gas from leaking into the ground or the surrounding environment. Geomembrane is commonly used as the anti-seepage liner of storage tanks, laid on the bottom and sides to effectively prevent oil and gas leaks.
