Woven Geotextile for Soft Soil Reinforcement

Woven Geotextile for Soft Soil Reinforcement

The very first step in a road construction project is testing the soil’s bearing capacity, known as CBR (California Bearing Ratio). If testing shows a CBR of <2%, the soil is clearly unsuitable as a road base because it is soft soil, and woven geotextile soft soil reinforcement becomes the answer.

Installing woven geotextile for soft soil reinforcement

Properly designed installation of high-strength woven geotextile acts as reinforcement to increase stability and prevent failure. Woven geotextile also reduces horizontal and vertical movement of the soil beneath it, which reduces differential settlement.

Visually, soft soil can be penetrated by a finger to a depth of at least 2.5 cm. Embankments built on soft soil tend to spread laterally because of horizontal earth pressure acting within the fill. This pressure creates horizontal shear stress at the base of the embankment that the foundation soil must resist. If the foundation soil lacks sufficient shear resistance, failure will occur.

Woven geotextile is not only used for reinforcement. It also acts as a separation layer (separator) between the soft subgrade and the soil or fill material above it, so the design thickness is maintained and the road stays stable, level and free of waves on its surface.
