Difference Between Geogrid and Geonet
Geosynthetic products vary widely in form, material and application. However, some geosynthetic products look almost the same and are described in similar ways. One example is Geonet and Geogrid. Geonet and Geogrid are, of course, different products with different functions. But before discussing the difference between geogrid and geonet, we need to explain what Geonet is and what Geogrid is.
Geonet
Geonet is a geosynthetic product made from a polymer, high density polyethylene (HDPE). Geonet is a 2D sheet with diamond-shaped openings. Geonet generally serves as a drainage layer in a project. When used as a drainage system, geonet is usually combined with geotextile, which filters out materials other than liquid so they do not enter the geonet’s voids.

Geogrid
Geogrid is a geosynthetic product made from various polymers such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyester (PET) and fibre glass. Geogrid is a 2D sheet with square openings. Geogrid generally serves as a material that reinforces the soil structure in a project. As a reinforcement system, geogrid is usually installed in layers to suit the project design and to reach the specified safety factor (generally ≥ 1).

Here are the differences between Geonet and Geogrid:
Geonet details:
- Material: High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
- Function: Drainage
- Application: Drainage systems in containment areas
- Shape (visual): diamond-shaped openings
Note that geonet is generally used together with non-woven geotextile, and the combination is called a geocomposite (geonet composite / drainage composite). In certain cases, a waterproof layer such as geomembrane or a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) is still needed to prevent the water in the geonet voids from seeping out and saturating the foundation soil.
Geogrid details:
- Material: Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE), Polyester (PET) and Fibre glass
- Function: Reinforcement
- Application: Road construction, slope construction, retaining wall construction, embankment construction, etc.
- Shape (visual): square openings
Note that geogrid sometimes needs to be combined with geotextile, because fill material may pass through the openings of the geogrid. The geotextile is usually placed beneath the geogrid.

PT. Petra Nusa Elshada supplies geonet made from HDPE and geogrid made from PP and PET. Geonet is available in various weights and geogrid in various tensile strengths. The geonet and geogrid products available comply with GRI and ASTM standards.
