Geobag Applications for Flood Protection

Geobag Applications for Flood Protection

Damage to dikes and dams is very common when the structure experiences water seepage, erosion, slope failure and natural disasters. These are the main problems that can lead to flooding (figure 1.1), which is why geobag flood protection is often needed.

Special measures are needed to prevent flooding and provide protection when existing dikes or dams are damaged. One solution is to use geosynthetic products. To protect against flooding, geobags made from non-woven geotextile can be used. Geobags can be placed along the existing slopes (figure 1.2). Geobags are usually filled with gravel or sand, which acts as ballast and resists water movement.

When a flood occurs, geobags can be used as a barrier around the flooded area to minimise its impact (figure 1.3). Geobags can be stacked in 2 arrangements depending on the size of the geobag (figure 1.4).

Besides geobags, woven geotextile is commonly used to reinforce the dike structure, non-woven geotextile for separation and filtration, geosynthetic clay liners to create an impermeable area, and geomats for erosion protection (figure 1.5).
