Geobag Installation Standards and Procedure

Geobags, also called high-strength geotextile bags, are filled with sand, are available in many sizes, and are used on riverbanks, for coastal protection and for offshore breakwaters. This article covers geobag installation standards.

Sand-filled geobags installed for coastal and riverbank protection

Geobags, also known as Geotextile Sand Containers (GSC), are a low-cost, soft and reversible solution for coastal protection structures and for strengthening coastal barriers and structures. Because of their many benefits, GSCs are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to conventional hard structures. Even so, GSC is still an emerging technology and there are no complete guidelines yet for designing GSC structures.

Geobags are PVC-based bags filled with sand. Geobags can be lifted by crane and filled with sand using automatic mechanical shovels. The installation process generally consists of the following steps:
The site must be prepared and evaluated according to the designer’s requirements. Unsuitable soil must be cleared from the slope, and sharp objects such as roots, large rocks or construction materials that could puncture the geotextile must be removed from the area. Any holes in the area must be filled or covered to avoid the geotextile spanning over them, which could cause tearing when the GeoBag is placed.

Geotextile Material for Geobag Installation

The geotextile must be formed using “J” SSn-2 seams. Suitable sewing equipment must be used, either a handheld sewing machine or a double-needle stitching machine. The manufacturer must specify the thread type and details of the sewing method, and the required overlap that meets the minimum physical properties. Sewing must be monitored by the Engineer on site.
Prefabricated Geo Bags must be filled with suitable material (or dredged material), preferably sand, and the top end must be sewn to close the opening.
The geobags are then placed, positioned and secured in the correct position without causing any damage to the geobags.
After the geobag installation is complete, the area is backfilled and compacted according to the required specifications.
