Geotextile Road Reinforcement: Construction Process

Geotextile Road Reinforcement: Construction Process

Geotextile is a material that is already widely used for soil reinforcement work, as cited from the site on geotextile, and it could even be called mandatory for geotextile road reinforcement. A road construction worker must therefore understand how to install geotextile properly. For this installation, the Department of Public Works has issued a document that can be used as a reference for soil reinforcement work with geotextile. Here are some important requirements for preparing the subgrade before geotextile is installed:

  • Level the ground surface by cutting down trees and leveling the tree stumps.
  • Avoid moving or pulling out roots and grass cover.
  • Leave some ground-cover vegetation such as grass and alang-alang (cogon grass).

Here is how to install geotextile:

  • Geotextile is placed with the roll length (machine direction) perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the embankment. Any joints must not run parallel to the longitudinal direction of the embankment; ideally they are joined at the factory to produce the required width.
  • After the geotextile roll has been carefully unrolled, the geotextile lies transverse to the longitudinal direction of the embankment. Do not drag the geotextile roll, to avoid tears that could reduce the strength or quality of the material.
  • Check the geotextile as it is spread out so that there are no wrinkles or folds, then place weights on top so that the wind does not lift it during spreading.
  • During filling, make sure the geotextile is fully spread out and undamaged. If any damage to the geotextile is found, it must be repaired immediately.
