Soft Soil Reinforcement with Geogrid
Construction on soft soil is usually associated with poor bearing capacity, meaning very significant settlement. Poor soil is one of the most common problems found on site, and geogrid soft soil reinforcement is one way to deal with it.

There are several ways to handle cases like this, but the main aim is to increase shear strength, increase density and provide lateral stability.
There are various soil improvement methods, such as compaction, aggregate columns, soil mixing, grouting and more. However, all of them come with considerations, especially construction time and long-term maintenance, which can be very expensive.

A lower-cost way to reinforce soft soil while still achieving good quality and strength is to use high-strength geosynthetic reinforcement, namely geogrid, laid over the soft soil. Reinforcement is applied horizontally, meaning the geogrid is laid out and the structure is built on top. Horizontal reinforcement can carry compressive loads from the surface or tensile loads in the horizontal direction.
Geogrid has several advantages as a soft soil reinforcement layer:
- High tensile strength.
- Flexible structure.
- Easy installation using manual labour.
- Relatively low geogrid price.
- Resistant to chemicals and microorganisms
