Geocell Slope Reinforcement at a Tangerang Cemetery

Geocell Slope Reinforcement at a Tangerang Cemetery

Project Background

Today’s modern cemeteries are designed not only to offer a beautiful, well-kept layout but also to prioritize visitor safety and the durability of their infrastructure. This project site in Tangerang Regency has a fairly challenging topography, marked by tall man-made slopes (cut/fill slope) that called for geocell slope reinforcement.

Without an adequate reinforcement system, a slope of around 45 degrees is a critical point that is highly vulnerable to surface erosion. This erosion can degrade and strip away the topsoil as rainwater scours it. In the worst case, it can trigger ground movement or shallow landslides that may damage access roads or nearby grave blocks. That is why slope protection was non-negotiable.

Technical Challenges on Site

Installing geocell as slope protection to prevent landslides on a steep slope

Securing a 45-degree embankment is not a civil engineering task to be taken lightly. PETRA’s field team faced several technical obstacles that had to be addressed quickly, including:

  • Gravity on an Extreme Slope
A 45-degree angle generates a very strong sliding force. Gravity constantly pulls the soil downward, making it hard to retain cover material and compact it.
  • Surface Water Flow (Run-off)
Tangerang Regency has fairly intense rainfall at certain times of the year. Rainwater running freely over an unprotected slope carries soil particles with it, creating gully erosion that damages the integrity of the slope.
  • Tensile Stress Requirements
The reinforcement system needs sufficient tensile strength at the panel joints to carry the heavy infill without tearing or structural failure.
  • Subgrade Conditions
The work area had to be prepared carefully. The slope subgrade had to be leveled and cleared of sharp objects before the protective material could be installed safely.

PETRA’s Innovative Solution: Geocell Slope Reinforcement

Backfilling soil into geocell panels installed on a cemetery slope

To give a definitive answer to these challenges, PETRA implemented a cellular confinement system using Geocell made of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) with a panel height of 10 cm.

The 10 cm depth was chosen based on engineering calculations as the optimal size to firmly lock in topsoil on a 45-degree slope without adding dead load that could overburden the slope itself. These were the technical installation steps applied by the PETRA team:

  1. Subgrade Preparation and Anchor Trench Excavation
Before the geocell was laid out, the slope surface was graded evenly and cleared of roots, sharp rocks and debris. At the top of the slope (crest), the team excavated an anchor trench. This trench is mandatory; it is where the ends of the geocell panels are buried and staked into the ground so the whole system does not slip (sliding) downhill.
  2. Expanding and Anchoring the Geocell
The 10 cm geocell panels were then stretched and expanded slowly using a top-to-bottom installation method (from the crest to the toe of the slope). The cell structure works on the principle of hoop stress, confining the infill on all sides. To keep the cells fully open on the steep slope, the PETRA team secured the system with J-pins (steel anchor stakes) placed strategically at close spacing. Each panel was also connected with industrial-grade (heavy-duty) cable ties to form a tightly interlocked protective blanket.
  3. Material Filling (Infilling) and Compaction
The final stage was filling the cells with soil. To suit the needs of a modern cemetery landscape that emphasizes green space, we used organic topsoil. Filling was done slowly with light equipment (with the rule that excavator tracks must never run over unfilled panels). The perforated (perforated) HDPE walls of our geocell ensure good drainage and add mechanical friction with the topsoil. The soil was then compacted with a small compactor until the surface was flush with, or slightly above, the cell edges.

Final Result

Using geocell as slope protection at this modern cemetery in Tangerang delivered excellent results. Once installation was complete and the grass had grown thick, the sturdy geocell structure holding the soil became completely invisible from the outside. The slope is now fully covered by a fresh, neat green carpet that blends perfectly with the modern cemetery landscape.

Functionally, geocell has made the sloping land in the cemetery much more resilient. The soil layer is protected from rainwater scouring. The risk of landslides or graves shifting due to erosion has been permanently prevented, so the management no longer needs to worry about damage to the land infrastructure in the future.

Conclusion

PETRA’s installation of 10 cm Geocell on the modern cemetery slope in Tangerang Regency was completed on target and to specification. The results are very satisfying: the critical 45-degree slope is now fully protected from surface erosion. The geocell matrix works like a “sturdy shield” that keeps the topsoil solid and in place, even under heavy rain.

The topsoil on the slope is now perfectly locked in and ready for the hydroseeding or planting phase so it blends nicely with the cemetery’s landscape design.

This slope reinforcement project once again proves that a precisely calculated engineering approach, combined with high-quality geosynthetic materials, can conquer difficult terrain.
