Geonet as a Drainage Liner

Geonet as a Drainage Liner

Every construction project needs a drainage system that can carry away liquids that would otherwise cause unexpected problems. Geonet drainage is one of the most effective solutions to the conditions commonly found in geotechnical construction, such as saturated soil, waterlogged ground, a bulging waterproof liner, seepage and leaks.

To deal with and prevent these unexpected conditions, a drainage system using geonet can be applied. Geonet is a geosynthetic product used as a drainage layer. It is usually combined with another geosynthetic material such as non-woven geotextile, which is why geonet is often called geonet composite or drainage geocomposite.

There are two common types of geonet: single sided and double sided. Single-sided geonet is bonded to non-woven geotextile on one side only, while double-sided geonet is bonded to non-woven geotextile on both sides. Apart from this general difference, they also differ in the geotextile weight used, namely 200 g/m2 and 270 g/m2.

Figure 2. Use of geonet in a storage pond

The figure above shows a simple design using geonet as a drainage liner combined with geomembrane for the containment area. Starting from the working floor, the geonet composite is laid out first, followed by the geomembrane on top of the geonet. Make sure all the geosynthetics that have been laid out are properly joined

and that the anchor trench area has been prepared. To support the drainage system of the geonet composite, also make sure there is an outlet for the liquid collected in the drainage area, so that the liquid does not saturate the geosynthetic layers.

Shown here is the section detail of the geosynthetic layering when geonet composite is used in a containment area as a supporting system that helps prevent damage to the geomembrane. In this case, a double-sided geonet composite is not mandatory. The geonet composite can be matched to site conditions to avoid going over budget. However, the higher the specification of the geonet composite, the greater the level of safety. Below are the technical specifications of the Geonet Composite supplied by PT. Petra Nusa Elshada:
