Choosing Geosynthetics for Slope Protection
Slopes are very common in geotechnical construction. Slopes need reinforcement and protection, because there is always a risk of landslides caused by erosion on the slope. To prevent landslides and reduce erosion, geosynthetics for slope protection can be used to reinforce and protect the slope surface.
This time we will discuss the geosynthetic products that can be used as a slope protection system. There are 2 types of geosynthetics for slope protection: Geomat and Geocell. Both products can protect the slope surface and support vegetation on the slope.
Geomat
Geomat is a geosynthetic product made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polypropylene (PP) polymers. Geomat comes in various specifications according to the layering needed on the slope: 2 layers, 3 layers, 4 layers and 5 layers. The main layer of the geomat is HDPE, which provides the following functions:
- Protection from UV rays
- Good chemical resistance
- Additional friction on the surface
- Helps bind vegetation
The secondary layer of the geomat is PP, which reinforces the geomat itself.
Geocell
Geocell is a geosynthetic product made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) polymer. Geocell comes in various specifications to suit road or slope requirements, with cell heights of 7.5 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm and 20 cm. In slope projects, geocell provides the following functions:
- Confines the slope fill soil
- Good chemical resistance
- Additional friction on the surface
- Supports the planting medium
So which geosynthetic should be used for slope protection? Both types (geomat & geocell) have their own advantages and disadvantages. Geomat is generally used only to support vegetation growth, so slope protection with geomat relies on root growth and on keeping the young vegetation from eroding. Geocell is mainly used to confine the slope material, which greatly reduces erosion and landslides because the soil is held in place by each cell.
